James has been working as a freelance lighting designer since 2005, starting out in the UK and the Middle East, before moving to Australia in 2011. Originally an Engineer and Project Manager by trade, James' passion for the arts and visual story telling has refocused his career to include Lighting Design., and has rapidly worked on varied projects of all sizes.

James Wallis
Originally from the UK, James is a freelance lighting designer based in Sydney. James’ recent design work includes Squabbalogic’s reimagined production of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever at The Seymour Centre, and the critically acclaimed productions of Nice Work if you Can Get it for Michele Guthrie, City of Angels and Bonnie & Clyde for Josh Robson Projections, all at The Hayes Theatre.
James designed Katie Pollock’s play Rough Trade for the Sydney Fringe Festival and its subsequent national tour; and the remounted Sydney Chamber Opera production of Victory Over the Sun at The National Gallery of Australia. Other notable productions include the national tour of Mentally Sound, and The City, a physical theatre piece, at The Sydney Opera House. James was the Associate Designer on the award-winning production of American Psycho at the Hayes Theatre and the Sydney Opera House.
Further selected credits include , The Mystery of Edwin Drood and NINE for Little Triangle, the opera Love Burns presented by The Other Theatre Company; Nancey Hayes’ cabaret Hayes at The Hayes, and was the Associated Designer for Red Lines’ A View From The Bridge at the Ensemble Theatre. For World Pride James was the designer on the queer adaptation of Cinderella, Sunderella at the Darling Harbour Theatre.
James designed the premiers of new Australian musicals: Ugly Love and Stalker both presented at the FlightPath Theatre as well as the original 2019 developmental production of The Dismissal for Squabbalogic.
